This organically grown Chardonnay from California’s Anderson Valley is perfectly autumnal — think pie crust, baked golden apples, and brown butter. The winery is a treat to visit, from a stroll through English gardens, to a jaunt in a six-wheel-drive Pinzgauer through the vineyards, to the elegant wine tasting. I find too many of them over oaked and too buttery for my tastes.

One wine that comes to mind is Sbragia’s "Gamble Ranch" Chardonnay. Start off at Stony Hill on Spring Mountain in Napa, one of the first wineries to ever produce Chardonnay in Napa. The best way to understand the broad spectrum of Chardonnay is to taste it.
There are, however, a few that I like. No ML on this so it retains a vibrant core of citrus fruit that so many ‘top’ Napa Chards lack. Burgundy is the ancestral home of opulent Chardonnay and this bottle, partially from 30-year-old vines and partially from 80-year-old vines, is no exception.
Average price: $46. Average price: $68. If you love big, buttery chardonnays, few wine producing regions deliver as well as California. Although most, including myself, wouldn’t consider a $28 bottle of wine a value, I think the 2007 Neyers Chardonnay is an exception; especially when one looks into the meticulous wine-making techniques practiced by the winery; like hand picking organically farmed fruit, whole-cluster pressing, and using only indigenous yeasts, to name just a few. Napa does not have a particularly cool climate, so the wines from this region tend to have more ripe, tropical fruit characteristics, and more richness, as well as more of a creamy mouth feel, thanks in large part to the new oak typically used for fermentation and aging. We've been going to the area for 10 years and end up at the same wineries! Plenty of oaky notes; vanilla and some butterscotch with a bit of apples.
