This book breaks down a lot of nuances to the way the foundering fathers thought like for example how some of them were against slavery but they knew they would be able to sustain their new country if they abolished it. Morgan has a long and distinguished pedigree as an American historian. This book is written for a general audience as one interpretation of the events of the founding which stresses the principle of equality as the driving force behind it all.
His interpretation of the Revolution is one that is defined by “the Americans’ search for principles.” During this search for principles, embodied in the arguments against Parliament, Americans chanced upon a “new discovery,” namely “human equality” (66). Graduate students here (myself included) whisper about a rare Morgan sighting and get excited when they find one of his books at a book sale with his name (and/or marginalia) written in it.

It lacks nuance and a detailed discussion of the political, social, and economic context of the pre- and post-Revolutionary era. Yet, Morgan was mindful of the shortcomings of this notion in practice, acknowledging that the Americans were “not prepared to follow the principle of equality to its logical political conclusion even for adult white males” (94).
History books are usually meant to inform, and while this one accomplished that goal, it also did an excellent job entertaining me at the same time. Well the colonies never really subscribed to it. But by the 1950s that interpretation no longer retained the excitement of its earlier days and early American historians, largely beginning with Morgan, began to reconsider the ideas behind the Revolution, which Progressives had written off as merely the elites’ rhetorical smokescreen meant to disguise more base economic and political motivations. He also rationalizes the contradiction of slavery's continued existence being incorporated into the Constitution by arguing that the convention delegates acted out of urgent concern for the future of a government in its death throes at the hands of a powerless Congress as set up by the Articles of Confederation -- without such compromise, the important new Constitution could not have been ratified by a sufficient number of states before the young nation collapsed at the feet of the British and Spanish.
