Using a unique fabric with diamond-shaped filaments that lock together, the new Helium Rain Jacket and Pants have five times the tear strength of the current Helium fabric, as well as a 50 percent higher waterproof rating. I find Paramo work brilliant as a jacket but the trousers are rubbish. Like the jacket the Enduro Tour trousers work well at keeping the weather out thanks to the use of Nikwax's waterproof Analogy fabric. The venting on the jacket is excellent; even in perfect weather I have not resorted to removing it when walking in. The build quality, active cut and environmental credentials are particular plus points, we reckon. There's a diamond gusset for high steps, and a bit of shaping at the knee. Light, comfortable and highly durable, our Alpine Torque Pants are a technical climbing pant that are also versatile enough for hillwalking and scrambling. For hot weather use, you get no vents, but I tend to find the fabric cool enough in itself, and unzipping the pockets helps a bit too. The Enduro Salopettes provide excellent freedom of movement, have tough reinforcement patches and the ability to "access all areas", even when using a harness. Hopefully Páramo will make the trousers in conventional black again, like they did in previous seasons. Torque Pants are available in a range of colours form sober to high-vis. The slim-fit design uses a leg zip with internal gusset for extra space and ventilation, as well as lower hem loops for attaching to your boots. The 'Matrix' double weave fabric has plenty of stretch, and between this and the cut I find leg movement is pretty much unrestricted. If you're after some no-nonsense do-it-all light-midweight two-season-ish legwear that'll equally suit rock climbing and hillwalking, sunny summer alpinism and backpacking, I think they're hard to beat. We need to look at ways to keep the site moving forward whilst maintaining our key aim of allowing free access to everyone to our main content. It's the next best thing to having your own tailor. I have a slightly positive ape index and found the sleeves to be plenty long enough, covering my wrists when my hands were above my head. Unfortunately the straight Torque Pants don't come in a women's version, though you could have Torque Lights or Women's Torque VR Pants. This can be in a small way or in a larger package that includes discounted products from our sister-publishing company Rockfax. Like the jacket the Enduro Tour trousers work well at keeping the weather out thanks to the use of Nikwax's waterproof Analogy fabric. You probably wouldn't want them at Stanage, but for summer Alpine use (or those rare Scottish days that feel like the Alps) these are top notch softshell trousers, says Dan Bailey. Worn with a climbing helmet the hood offers a good range of movement and excellent protection from the weather. Built for active mountain use in warm climates, our flexible, slim-fit Alpine Torque Pant is an uncompromising technical climbing garment that provides the freedom you need to perform at your best. In fully torrential rain, it uses your body heat to drive any precipitation that gets through the outer layer back out again. However in three months use, in all weathers, I am yet to be soaked through - neither cold and wet nor hot and sweaty. "The fabric is so breathable that I struggle to think of a situation where I would carry it instead of wearing it". This has a small plastic tab with a loop on it, which is handy for larks-footing a compass onto. Thankfully I was able to cannibalise some braces from another pair of trousers, which worked excellently. All rights reserved. Weighing just 100g (size Medium) the Podium really is light, says Rob Greenwood, with a minimalist pack size that will likely take up less room than your sandwiches. Large full length two way leg zips allow easy ventilation while a central zip on the bib and waist adjustment provide excellent temperature control. As long as you don't stitch the inner layer to the outer layer this will not compromise either waterproofness or breathability. and down at the ankle. [is that a bad thing? It also had a small internal zipped pocket for valuables and small zipped pocket on the left sleeve to store a lift pass. Down at the ankle is one of my favourite features, a little zipped gusset that allows some extra space to accommodate boots, while maintaining a neat close fit when you're wearing shoes. Páramo waterproof garments have two layers: a proofed outer shell layer, which is highly wind resistant, very breathable and weather proof; and a wicking inner layer that effectively acts as a pump, driving any sweat through to the outer layer. The Páramo Enduro Jacket is great in colder conditions where its great breathability means you can keep it on the whole time. Here's how they compare... Everyone likes a pair of jeans that you can climb in, but still look good down the pub - and the Mercury Jeans certainly tick those boxes.... Richard Prideaux puts these bombproof, 'technically advanced trekking trousers' through their paces. One of the drawbacks of the jacket is that with the hood down and the jacket fully zipped up, an option I often choose when winter climbing, it is slightly too tight around the chin. A long panel of a thicker, rougher fabric runs from the knee, down the inside lower leg to the ankle. When wearing a harness, the secure fit at the waist and hips ensures minimal bulk. © UKClimbing Limited. The Enduro Salopettes are designed to fulfil the needs of the demanding outdoor professional. In the conventional sense of Hard Shells and Soft Shells the answer is probably no. The first in a new series on being a first-time Páramo user, Alex Roddie ditches his Gore-Tex on a soggy August day in the Highlands. This provides a high level of abrasion resistance where most neeeded, both at the knee (we all use them occasionally, don't we?) The waist can be adjusted by an internal webbing belt, which works well. Minimal bulk under harness from secure fit at waist and hips. When climbing I often turn up the cuffs of my trousers to keep them clear of my rock shoes, and though the Torque Pants don't have any kind of popper here I find they hold a turnup perfectly well anyway (albeit with a bit of bulk on the outside of the ankle thanks to that gusset). When working hard in extreme conditions, you need legwear which will offer all-day comfort, unrestricted movement and protection from cold and wet conditions. That said, free-riding in Páramo might raise a few eyebrows! UKClimbing is a vibrant web site with rich content and an amazing community. I find these the most suitable garment, for Scottish winter climbing. Jeez. It's hard to imagine how... Mountain Equipment's Dihedral Pant is designed to be "the perfect all-round pant" for "year round climbing everywhere from big walls, to sea cliffs and training boards". The Enduro Tour Trousers combine the Nikwax Analogy Waterproof System with stretch panels and an improved design and an articulated fit for unrestricted freedom of movement. It offers excellent temperature control, a helmet and harness-compatible design, and a great choice of pockets. The Enduro Salopettes provide excellent freedom of movement, have tough reinforcement patches and the ability to "access all areas", even when using a harness. A new, improved fit offers even better comfort on the mountain. When ski touring I was just able to squeeze them over my bulky ski boots. This year, that is exactly what they have done. The system provides the insulation you require in the worst conditions. One of the best things about Páramo's use of Nikwax Analogy directional waterproof fabric, especially if you’re a clumsy climber like me, is that these garments can easily be repaired with a needle and thread. Though we hear Rab may be considering making a few changes for next year, it's hard to imagine how Torque Pants could be much improved, and I hope the alterations are minor. The trousers come with three quarter length side zips, allowing you to put them on without removing your boots. Arc'teryx Creston Pants are light trousers, pitched at those after warm-weather, breathable legwear with a bit of stretch.
