I agree that the author did an impressive job of making a story about WWII so personal, engaging and thrilling. Looked for this book after I saw a preview for a movie based on this story that came out last year. Tuvia insisted that the camp be open to all Jews, regardless of age, health, or physical ability. In spite of all odds he kept bringing in refugees and providing a place for them. While reading such material is emotionally hard, I think it is important to understand what happened and to not let the suffering of those people be forgotten. The refugee society in the woods is itself far from Utopian, and the decisions the brothers make to discourage dissension may be necessary but are also startling. It was life affirming and heart breaking at the same time. These brothers were indeed heroes to some, but what of the several Jews summarily executed by them for not following them unquestionably?

As he was a former Polish citizen, he had the right to return to his homeland, which was now liberated. These people were amazing at what they pulled off. In April 1980 a memorial service was held in the Fighters and Partisans Museum in Beit Jabotinsky in Tel Aviv, to commemorate 35 years since the fall of the renowned partisan commander, Asael Bielski. Duffy wastes no chance to make this already amazing story even greater by describing the era, deeds and people with a light artistic style. The story was dramatized in the film "Defiance," starring Daniel Craig, but the author provides a great deal of additional detail about how the brothers sought to help Jews in the nearby ghettoes escape before it was too late and how they coped with the hardships of life in the forest and the persistent efforts of the Nazis to track them down. A lot I didn't know about history was in this book. What I have come away with, after reading this book, is something I was not expecting when I started reading it. The four brothers, Tuvia, Zus, Asael, and Aron, all worked together to ban Jews in the forests of Belarus, which at the time was German occupied Poland. My second encounter with Asael was personal, face to face. This was another book that I had watched the movie for long before I read the book. I normally think of myself a pacifist but in the end it seemed as though the end might justify the means, but it was tough reading. And indeed, in the Book of Samuel, II, in the second chapter 2, it is told at length of those loyal to the House of David - the Kingdom of Judah and about Avner ben Ner of the House of Saul, those loyal to the Kingdom of Israel and among other things it says:

It describes their story and how they saved the lives of over twelve hundred Jews. There is no doubt that this is a compelling story, but perhaps not for the reasons you might expect. The Bielski partisan group decided to prioritize saving Jews, according to Tuvia Bielski "I would rather save one old Jewish woman than kill ten German soldiers". These men were so brave and skillful--they faced so much opposition--the Nazis of course, but there were internal threats to their authority, and they were also incorporated into the Soviet partisan movement and had to answer to the Russians, empahsizing to them that they were saving Soviet citizens, which was true, but the real mission was to save the Jewish people.
